<image:caption>Remains of the day Last time we visited the Pierce County Educational forest, we found this on one of the entryway benches. Not sure what animal it is from, but super interesting to come across things like this on our journeys. The forest is beautiful and still, despite the nearby highway. If you’re ever in the area and see the sign, it’s worth a jaunt. You’ll find a variety of trees (with informational placards) and signs of wildlife on the winding trail. If in summer, however, bring mosquito repellent!</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - Of ferris wheels and sunshine</image:title>
<image:caption>Of Ferris wheels and sunshine As a kid, I loved going to the fair. My favorite ride was Crack-the-whip, which was pretty tame by today’s standards. Of course, I went on to the “harder stuff,” but these days I’m happy to be a spectator, and the ferris wheel, or maybe the Tilt-a-Whirl is enough excitement for me. And now, going through the animal barns and arts and crafts exhibits is something I enjoy even more. The very aura of the fair evokes nostalgia and excitement: Walking on to a midway and smelling the popcorn, the multiple fried delicacies, even the garbage. The sounds of the machinery and the people calling us in to spend our last dollar on a game. The kids running to us to tell us of the latest ‘awesome’ ride they were brave enough to try! Yup, I still love going to the fair.</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - Make a wish on a wildflower</image:title>
<image:caption>Make a wish on a wild flower In sixth grade, one of my friends and I wrote a song called, “Make a wish on a wild flower.” I still find myself randomly chanting the melody these many years later. Sometimes I stop and reconstruct full verses of lyrics, and it becomes the song in my head for the day. It wasn’t a good song by any stretch of the imagination, but it was an original collaboration! I can still remember us, sitting in her basement on a rainy day, trying different guitar chord combinations, rhymes and nonrhymes. It was possibly, the preteen sequel to “he loves me, he loves me not.” Instead of pulling petals off, we were content to just make wishes. Wishes for romance, love and the pain of the inevitable break-up. Things that we had no experience with yet. But isn’t that what song-writing or creating any art is about? Exploring and defining our world, or how we wish it could be?</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - Blood moon through the trees</image:title>
<image:caption>Blood moon through the trees I get by with a little help from my friends. One good pal often texts me when the moon looks great. Sometimes I’m good about watching the skies and knowing about celestial events, whether I plan to photograph them or not. Other times, not so good. Last Friday night, my phone rang. It was another friend, who’d just left a short while ago after an evening at the pool. “I just wanted to let you know that I’m almost home, and the moon is orange and the sky is blue!” She was so excited! I was tired after two hours of swimming, but I ran out anyway for a few hand-held shots. I haven’t gotten the greatest results with my moon shot endeavors, but this one turned out OK, even though the moon isn’t the focus. Thanks to dear friends, I’m alerted to photo opportunities! You know who you are! Thank you!</image:caption>

Perhaps you’ll nit pick and say that there’s no yellow here, but we could have made that happen as well. Early summer evenings, especially after a rain, leave the ground colors saturated and the sky colors muted. It’s a tranquil scene that brings a feeling of peace and calm. Can’t you just about feel the grass between your bare toes?</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - Volunteers</image:title>
<image:caption>Volunteers. Since my second vegetable garden, oh so many years ago, I have been fascinated at the “volunteers” from the year before. These are plants that defy the rototiller and spring up unbidden in the new spring garden. I’ve had volunteer tomatoes, chives (pictured), lettuce, corn, and others. Not to mention the strawberries that I rescued a few years ago at a plant sale, which have been quietly spreading from their spot that I so quickly planted them in. Veggie gardens are a lot of work, so one has to marvel that some of these volunteers show up year after year, to lend their fruits – er, their vegetables? – to our labors. Speaking of which, we’re now accepting applications for volunteer weeders. No takers? LOL. Until next time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - When the sky's the subject</image:title>
<image:caption>When the sky’s the subject As a photographer, I never stop learning. First it was about equipment and learning about focus, exposure, developing. All the buttons and dials, ratios and fractions. Then it became about what makes a good photo. Concept, composition, light, color, value range, emotion, the story. (and more) I didn’t realize that as I delved deeper, I would also be learning as much as I could about meteorology and geography, sunset times and star maps. But like any worthwhile endeavor, photography offers many layers of meaning to explore. Whether using my 110 Kodak camera, my Dad's 120, my first 35mm, a Polaroid or a DSLR, there have always been the unknowns that have to be mastered. Not to mention the software and post production capabilities that await the photographer once the shutter is pressed. While I prefer a natural look, I also enjoy immensely “pushing” an image to its limits, to see what can be revealed with a slider. And all without the stinky chemicals of the darkroom. I guess you could say the sky's the limit. What a wonderful world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - Scattered sunlight</image:title>
<image:caption>Scattered sunlight. One of my favorite places to watch the sun go down, this is a view from my patio west. The rays of light are falling against my “shade garden.” It started as a rocky spot in the lawn between two trees. When we first moved here, this spot was a pain to mow, and the tree roots made the lawnmower groan and clack. So I put in a bunch of hardy perrenials that could withstand the jet stream west wind, and the rest is history. This garden has been thoroughly neglected over the past 10 years and continues to bring color and joy to the yard. It once had a mulch path, and a plan for expansion to the nearby pines that give our place its name. However, things don’t always go according to plan; still it frames a wonderful view out west on these summer evenings.</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - Lazy daisy days</image:title>
<image:caption>Lazy daisy days It’s not really hot enough to call this Wisconsin summer lazy just yet. But these happy flowers are making their move to take over the lawn. We go around. They only bloom for a few weeks, and they add a beautiful brightness to the mornings and an ethereal glow to windy twilight moments. Daisies are actually in the sunflower family, and are heliotropic: their faces turn toward the sun as it moves through the blue summer sky. Two songs about daisies come to mind, both about love. “Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do….” made famous by Nat King Cole, and also known as the Bicycle Built for Two song. And then there is “I’ll give you a daisy a day,” Glen Campbell’s ballad of long-lasting love. Tell me now, which one are you humming?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lilac sunset The lilacs are a bit late to bloom this year. I think it's because of that blizzard in mid-April. You have seen this photo before if you're the proud owner of a Seasons of Wisconsin 2018 calendar, and you may have shared it with others if you bought my first card set. This evening was very peaceful, except for the three kids playing in the yard. They had the soccer ball and a hula hoop and were running through the fresh-cut grass. We were experimenting with action shots and they were also playing hide-and-go-seek with me. We're a multi-tasking group! Anyway, during a pause in the action, I saw this. This photo is currently on exhibit at the Hudson Hospital, in the cafeteria. It's framed and printed on beautiful, soft touch Torchon paper. You could take someone to lunch and see it in person! P.S. It's also for sale.</image:caption>

<image:caption>They bloom for just about a week, but when they do, they carpet the forest floor in a swath of white and sometimes pink. Trilliums are Ohio’s state wildflower, and are actually considered a perrenial herb; the green “leaves” are actually bracts. They spread by rhizome and are easy to kill if you “upset” the growth. Facts aside, a field of trilliums under the forest canopy is my happy place. The wind in the trees and the flowers at my feet. The dog at my side. I might even write a poem!</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - "Woodland Wonder"</image:title>
<image:caption>Woodland Wonder. I came of age in the suburbs, but there was a large, undeveloped area of field and woods that my group of friends and I just called “The Field.” Its paths and trails were our playground. We rode mini-bikes, found hollow-tree hiding places and in general pretended we were country kids in another place and time. We spent hours there over the course of our preteen and teen years, and it was also my shortcut to my piano lesson. We had names for the different landmarks, including “The Devil’s Hill Tree,” a popular meeting spot for the beginnings of many an adventure. It was a familiar, if mysterious, landscape to us, and we were heartbroken when the land was be divded for home building. Here’s to the wild places of our youth. May they ever be available and not too far away.  </image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - "April wild winds"</image:title>
<image:caption>April wild winds The wild winds of March and April create so much drama in the sky. It’s quite distracting while driving. It’s hard not to be entranced by multi-layered clouds of so many different hues of blue and purple with just a hint of orange. And when the sun breaks through something like this is is simply magical. I solve the distraction problem by driving about 5 mph or less. Yes, I’m the one who is putt-putting along the country roads. Maybe I need one of those bumper stickers that reads, “this vehicle stops at all chances for an amazing photo.” But the mud from Lake Krentz (see previous post) would only obscure it. So I usually just pull over, put my hand out the window and motion those who need to get by to pass. I don’t want to miss a good sky.</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - "Vacation Getaway?"</image:title>
<image:caption>Vacation getaway? We dubbed this eternally persistent driveway puddle “Lake Krentz” last year. It’s prominently located, and varies in depth depending on the rainfall. Yes, we could fill it in with gravel, and we probably – eventually – will. But for now, it provides so much entertainment for us. The kids splashed in it for years, properly muddying up their rain boots and clothing. Plus, it’s a popular spot during spring and summer for all sorts of song birds. They fly in for a quick afternoon getaway, splashing and playing in its waters, preening their feathers on its banks, and thumbing their beaks (if they had thumbs) at the overly confident cats who prowl in the hostas, waiting for their chance to pounce. And when the day is done, they can easily nest in one of the many nearby tree condos. It’s also a popular spot for area photographers, who capture its moods and reflections in all kinds of weather. I can’t find a more intriguing place looking out my back door. Part of me will be sad when the inevitable avalanche lands. But my white car will, no doubt, rejoice at a thinner coating of mud.</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - April (snow) showers delay May flowers</image:title>
<image:caption>April (snow) showers delay May flowers I've photographed this stand of trees many times on my morning walks. This morning, I was off to an appointment but I had to stop the car, because this sight was just too breathtaking, and I'm not talking about the wind chill. Despite the fact that it's April 6, and it should NOT be 16 degrees F (-8C), even in Wisconsin. Despite the fact that we were literally trapped in the house during Tuesday's blizzard, without cat food of all things. (Plenty of milk and bread, though.) Despite the fact that it seems like Spring is never gonna get here. Because the swirling snow, the rising sun, the poofy clouds - they are beautiful. And unless we make an effort to stop and look, we won't see the magnificent beauty that surrounds us on a daily basis. Did I mention I'd forgotten my gloves? BRRRRR!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Crocus hocus pocus There is some famous poem about the crocus, but in my Google search to find it, my internal voice kept chanting “fungus among us,” and I know that’s not it! Love finding crocus under the snow, its white or purple blooms a spring surprise. In these cold climes, I’ll take any sign of spring! Thoughts turn toward the yard at this point in the year, and for a few short weeks, anything seems possible. Maybe we’ll have a new area or two with interesting plants and new colors. Maybe this year, I’ll keep up with the garden! Anything seems possible as April bursts forth with new life and wet feet! It’s really too soon in Wisconsin to plant anything, but we eagerly wait for the danger of frost to pass, gathering our seeds and straightening our trowels. And here to cheer us on is the lovely, persistent and delicate yet hardy, crocus. Happy Easter!</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - "Rein him in"</image:title>
<image:caption>Rein him in! This photo was actually captured last March at the schooling horse show at Lost Creek Ranch. Nickers (the horse) was not having a good day, and his rider was doing her best to show him off as well as prove her own ability. I really like this photo: the textures, the determination on the rider's face and the mud flying. It's not technically perfect, or even very good, but it has the ability to take me back to that cold March day, hear the sounds of hooves on dirt, and see the steam coming from the nostrils of the horse, the stubborn tilt of his head. There were not many blue ribbons that day, but at least a few lessons learned, and that is what is supposed to happen at a schooling show.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rocky reflections I love the serenity of water and rocks. Something about sitting quietly on the riverside brings peace to my soul. Listening to the wind in the trees and the calls of wildlife calms my spirit. Except, while capturing this image, behind me are four rowdy kids throwing rocks and in general up to hijinks on the beach. Their joy is infectious and they don’t sit still for long. Still, I can dream of my small personal haven when I look at this photograph, and know that peace is largely a concept of the inner world.</image:caption>

Nevertheless, against an early morning blue sky, snow can take on magical qualities and be quite pretty. Plus, even in Wisconsin, March snow is not gonna last! But after trekking for awhile, you might find yourself tired, so tired that you need to lie down in the sun for awhile. The cool air emanating from the snow is very soothing and you could almost take a nap. But you can’t, because you’ll get hypothermia. Still, it’s nice to lie there awhile, soaking up that vitamin D.</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - "Morning road."</image:title>
<image:caption>“Morning road.” March is a particularly capricious month in Wisconsin. One day it will be 30-40 degrees F and then next day will be a blizzard. We recently experienced this fluctuation. I left the house in the morning for several appointments, and by 4 p.m. when I called for a ride home, the sky was spitting snow. After a harrowing ride home, it was time for some comfort food and a warm blankie. By the end of that night we had at least six inches of new white stuff, giving me another few days to get the winter photos I need for the 2019 calendar. If you didn’t purchase one of my 2018 Seasons of Wisconsin calendars, you missed this image, which graces the month of February (bye, Feb.!) but was actually captured in April, so I thought it only fitting that it should bridge the gap with a March blog post. I’m shooting to have the 2019 calendars ready by end of October this year, so check back before then and let me know if any images from this blog should be considered for inclusion.</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - "Blue green purple morning"</image:title>
<image:caption>“Blue green purple morning” Driving down country roads is one of my favorite pass times. Especially during the quiet times, when traffic slows and I can take my time, pulling over if someone in more of a hurry comes through. Driving slowly gives me a chance to glimpse possibilities in the world around me. As a young child, whenever I got to go on a plane trip, I would love to look down on the Earth below. The farm fields and cities were laid out in an enormous quilt of life. I would think about the people below, going about their lives, and wonder what they were doing and thinking. Seeing these patterns from a different angle is natural to me. I love the textures of our Earth. The fields, manicured and planned; the trees, reaching for the sky and the clouds, wild and free, in the wind above it all. It’s like a co-creation between man and God. Appearing random, but each part having its purpose, plan and time for action. No wonder some of my favorite colors are blue, green and purple.</image:caption>

<image:title>Can I see the forest for the trees? - "Waiting for sunrise"</image:title>
<image:caption>Waiting for sunrise It started as a weekend of camping. It ended in a day of rain and crabby kids. But in between, I got out early to set up my tripod and capture a predawn palette of soft pastels brushing up against a backdrop of soft greens and browns. It was mid-summer, so the grasses were very lush and the dew clung to every surface possible. I thrashed my way out of our campsite to this field, and was not disappointed. Waiting and watching while the sun wakes up has been a joy beyond what I’d imagined when I envisioned it. The whole world is quiet and seems to be waiting. A few birds are calling their early morning greetings. Then, as the sun makes its appearance over the horizon, everything stirs to life and I can feel the movement around me of the amazing abundance of life on Earth. It’s phenomenal, simple and beautiful. I feel humbled, reverent and very grateful to experience it.</image:caption>
